Safe & Sound In Burgos!

As you know we spent an extra day in Santo Domingo to give Angie’s swollen feet a rest. She decided that one day was fine. On Saturday we left Villafranca at 8:30AM while it was snowing (see photos). Temps were in the high 30s. It snowed about 1/4 of our hike. We had three hills to climb and the wind did not cooperate. We called it quits after 7 miles. On Sunday we decided to make up the mileage. It took us 11 hours to go 16 miles from San Juan Ortega to Burgos.Temps in the low 40s, terrible wind from the side, crappy rock strewn trail. You had to have seen it to believe it. Angie was in dire pain most of the day. Left foot swollen and to make matters worse, a pesky and painful blister. She limped into Burgos after 6 Advil and 1 Vicodin-it was not pretty.
We decided to take 1 day of rest. I brought Angie to a foot doctor here in Burgos. The doctor gave her a prescription (heavy duty anti inflammatory & an anti nausea.) Doctor said to keep off of foot for 3 days. I told Angie to take the bus to the next 3 – 12 mile stops. She wouldn’t listen. The compromise is 1 extra day of rest here in Burgos and she wants to hit the road again??## …..I really could use some help here! She just doesn’t listen to me anymore.
Mike

Mike and Angie: We are following your progression: Bravo! BUT at this point we feel you should take the train to LUGO and finish on foot to Santiago from there.
Take Care of you!.. Love. Pascale and Brian.

I admire Angie’s determination, but I would take the advice of the doctor to take at least 2 days of rest off the foot. If more damage is done because she is on it too soon, it may make for “bus travel” that I know Angie does not want! Go, Angie! So, rest and make decisions as you rest together! Love you both and may you be able to continue your travels safely and without pain.
Love,
Mar

Angle…please take the bus. Having honking big size 8 feet myself, I worry about your beautiful little feet…and I believe the good Lord has no wish for you be in pain like that. Maybe there’s someone special you will meet on the bus that would not have happened otherwise? You never know! We love you both! Lynne and Greg

Mike and Angie,
I asked my son – I don’t know if either of the following suggestions are
any good. You evaluate: My son tells me that he wares two pair of socks,
the inner thin and the second outer thicker. He says that the “rubbing” therefore
goes in between the socks. #2 Flip flops, to let your feet breath – but that would
be impossible because it is too cold and the path is not smooth.
William put your picture up on his site. Angie, you look so good. You
don’t look like your fee hurt. HEAL FEET.

Agree- absolutely two socks, and certainly take at least two days to heal the problems because if you don’t you will not be able to go ahead. Taking one small stage on a bus is also okay because it is a tiny part of the trail overall. God gave us diesel bus engines for a reason – so we will help ourselves when we need. Love your posts and I’m with you in spirit —-Love, Christine

We leave one week from today for the Camino and we are getting a bit worried! Your e-mails have been a priceless treasure, especially the story of William, since we hope to arrive in SDC on May 17 as well.
As for you, dear Angie, Alex and I think you should rest (before you do permanent damage), take the bus, and remember: This is not a race…it is the journey that counts.
Much love, Debbie & Alex

Hello you two,
We’re so happy to hear you have made it to Burgos!
Loved meeting William. What an amazing and heartwarming story.
We should be in Leon Monday the 20th and then have reservations at Hotel Catholica in Santiago the 21st through the 23rd , with hopes of meeting somewhere along the trail. If you should need a lift, we will have a car. Please don’t do anything to cause permanent damage to your body!!
We were just with a friend, today, who stopped at Leon, due to injuries several years ago, and this fall is going to complete the journey.
Love the pictures! Angie, your hair looks great!
I have run into Lindsey and Constance and they send their love, as well as John and I.
Talk again soon,
Hugs,
Janet

Hola Mike and Angie,
I have been having trouble sending comments. If this is repetitious, please forgive me.
Please take good care of you. John and I should be in Leon two weeks from today, on Monday the 20th. We’ll have our car and would love to pick up two hikers from SB.
Love hearing all your stories, especially meeting William.
Weather sounds cold, which we guess is better than hot.
Be sensible, so we can see you soon.
Hugs,
J&J

Yo chick……Cool it !!! Get off the feet now. Listen to your mother-in law and your smart friends ! . You are not thinking about what could happen to you down the road. Heck if it were me, I’d take the bus the whole trip! Seriously, Give yourself permission to rest. You could end up like me with these wretched Shingles from too much stress ! DON’T DO IT !xx Jane
